Monday, March 18th: State science test starts tmrw... Today in class we started a practice test for review... No notes or h.w. given... Please charge your laptop and bring tmrw... VERY IMPORTANT... Thank You... Mr. Zemek

Week 10 Semester 2
Monday, March 11: State Science Teste is next week on Tues. and Thurs. Today we'll do a practice test to help prepare for the test next week... Students will earn a grade for completing the test.. If absent you can't make up the test.. You'll need to do a make up assgn. as you can ONLY access test during class time...

Tuesday, March 12th: State test prep on our solar system and universe...
Students got a quick lesson to cover some material that will be on the state test next week... Can you list our planets in order from closest to farthest from the sun.
Can you determine the difference between one astronomical unit and a light year?
We'll take a computer generated space trip from earth to the edge of the universe in 5 min... We'll move faster than the speed of light and stop to point out some important facts on our journey... Notes were taken to help with the process... Copy them if you were absent.... The last 10 min. we passed back and filed papers.. Students also checked their grade for mistakes... 9 were found and corrected...!!

Wednesday, March 13: Minimum Day Today... Students released at 12:45 pm for parent conferences at 130 pm... Students reviewed and observed an electric field produced by a Van De Graph generator.... What particle is responsible for this? Students observed a college professor play with that generator on a YOU TUBE documentary... No notes or h.w. given today.
Thursday, March 14th: Minimum Day today.... Students released at 12:45 pm for parent conferences at 1:30 pm - 7:30 pm. Today students were introduced to a short introduction to magnets in preparation for the state science test next week on Tuesday and Thursday. Short demos and notes on the rules of magnets...
Friday, March 15th: Minimum Day today... Students released at 12:11 pm... Can grab a lunch and go if want.. Students completed an Ed Puzzle posted on my Google class page in class today about magnets... Completed video and q's to earn your grade for today....

Week 9 Semester 2
Monday, March 4th: Lab today where students had to build at their table a series and parallel circuit... Need to show Zemek your parallel circuit to get paid full credit...Turn off one light bulb and the 2nd should stay on... Draw and label your circuits when done... Lab should be completed in class NOT H.W.
Students worked with a partner on this lab...

Tuesday, March 5th: Why do some electrical plugs have 2 prongs and some have 3?
What is that 3rd pong for?? Students learned about why circuits need a "GROUND".
Why can birds land on power lines and NOT get electrocuted? Notes, demos, discussions and videos of animals getting caught in power lines... Why will some get zapped and some not? No h.w. today...
Wednesday, March 6th: Students watched a documentary on lightning... Worlds most powerful electricity... What happens to people hit by lightning? Does metal have anything to do with it? How can you decrease and increase your chances of getting hit? Complete the fact sheet given to you in class to earn your grade for the day... If absent pick up the fact sheet and google the answers at home...
Thursday, March 7th: DEMO LAB today... Does electricity travel through water?
Students wrote a question, hypothesis, data and a conclusion to this question in their science notebook. Zemek fired up the generator and tried to send electricity through all different types of water.... Why does it flow and NOT flow through water? If absent you need to copy down the notes when you return..

Tuesday, Feb 27: Mr. Zemek is out of class today for school business... Students are to complete the Ed Puzzle and Brain Pop assignments posted in my google class...

Wednesday, Feb 28th: What is a circuit? Students will be able to identify the parts of a circuit: Load, source, flow of electrons. What is the difference between a series and parallel circuit? Notes and demos in class....Will continue into tmrw....
Thursday, Feb 29th: Reviewed circuits.... Students were shown 8 cartoon circuits.....
They had to identify the 4 that will work...Prize for those that can identify.

Friday, March 1st: Circuit building in class on your chrome book.... Zemek needs to see a parallel circuit that YOU built on a website listed on top of your lab paper... After Zemek signs you off....Draw and label your parallel circuit on the bottom of your lab paper.... Turn in at the end of class ...

Tuesday, Feb 20: How was your 4 day weekend...Class discussions.
Mr. Zemek talked about his weekend and his atrial fibrillation that happened to his heart last week on Thursday and kept him out of school.. What is it? How can it be treated?
Students broke down their steam engines that were built and ran last week... Everything gets recycled except the tape...
Introduction into our next unit on electricity... Students observed a 12,000 volt Jacob Ladder shoot sparks from one wire to the other... Very cool!.

Wednesday, Feb 21: New Unit: ELECTRICITY..... What is it? What is an atom? What part of the atom is responsible for electricity? What are 3 parts of an atom and what charge do they carry? Notes, demos and stories on electricity.... No h.w.
Thursday, Feb 22: Continue with the parts of an atom... What has a +, neg., and a neutral charge? What causes objects to become positive and negative? Why do balloons repel or attract when rubbed with a sock? Notes, demos with electricity and the last 10 minutes kids were able to feel 60-100 volts travel through their hand... Billions of electrons moving through your fingers can be funny or painful for some.....But what an experience.... If absent copy down the important notes you missed... New grades were posted yesterday... check and see how good or bad your doing...
Friday, Feb 23rd: We reviewed the parts of an atom...Do you know them?
What is a conductor and an insulator? Zemek will send electricity through 8 different objects...Will electricity get through or not? Students will make predictions first and then see if they're correct.. How about humans??? Are we conductors or insulators ?? Notes, demos and experiments in class... Copy missed notes down..
Week 6 Semester 2
Monday, Feb 12: Lab today building our steam engine out of an aluminum can....
We'll finish today and run them tmrw. over a propane burner...Will yours work??? Listen and follow the steps that Zemek gives you....
Tuesday, Feb 13th: Students ran their steam engine over a propane burner...Did yours work? If not play around with it to improve what's wrong... Put more water in it and try again...
Zemek gave specific instructions of how to do it correctly and what NOT TO DO....
Lab will continue into tmrw.... When done with your steam engine everything will get taken apart and recycled....
Wednesday, Feb 14: You can continue to try and run your steam engine over the propane burner... You also need to complete your steam engine lab sheet for your grade....What forces were involved with your steam engine? What can you do to engineer a better engine? If you don't finish your lab sheet you have homework to complete and get turned in tmrw...
Thursday, Feb 15th: Mr. Zemek went home sick today... Students watched a movie on the earth's oxygen production hosted by Will Smith... Complete your documentary q's and answers to get credit for today... Turn in at the end of class. If absent you need to do a make up sheet for your points.. See the RED folder up in front to get that make up sheet.

Monday, Feb 5th: Collision simulator game on Amplify... Log in on my google class page...click on the website posted and play with the different size pucks... Collide them... Complete the collision worksheet to earn your grade for the day... Test over motion and forces is tmrw... Bring your chrome book charged and your science notes CAN BE USED... bring them too...
Tuesday, Feb 6th: Motion and forces test... 30 q's = 30 pts...

Thursday, Feb 8th: Lab today...Building a steam engine out of a soda can...
Listen and follow the steps that Zemek gives you to build your steam engine...We'll build the engine over 2 days... On Monday we will run them over a propane fire.
How well will yours spin.....??? Very cool lab...even cooler if you get yours to spin at a supersonic speed??!!!

Monday, Jan 29th: What is momentum? What happens when objects crash or collide into one another? Which object delivers the most force? Can you place objects in order from most to least momentum? Play with a Newton's cradle on line and complete the fact sheet to earn your grade for the day..
Tomorrow evening here at JWMS we have a STEAM NIGHT from 5-7 pm... I will have fun with electricity in room 504 from 5-6 and at 6 pm when it gets dark enough outside we'll have the telescopes out and pointed at the planets Saturn and Jupiter..... Cool stuff...
Tuesday, January 30th: Tonight from 5-7 pm is a science fun night at James Workman... Called STEM CON... Mr. Zemek will be having fun with electricity from 5--6 pm and out in front of school with telescopes from 6-7 pm looking at Saturn and Jupiter... Today in my 8th grade science class will be more notes and demos on momentum... a moving force... What is the formula for momentum? How is the force calculated? Class demo with a real NEWTONS CRADLE.... How do they work and what do they show? The last 20 min. students calculated the momentum of 8 objects and placed them in order from least to most... COMPLETE this worksheet to earn your grade for the day... If absent see me to get and copy down the notes you missed...

What has more momentum: A train or a truck? Lets look at some video of the 2 objects colliding...Who wins and why? The last 10 min. students can finish the past 2 worksheets on Newton's Cradle or your momentum wkst...
Thursday, Feb 1st: Lab today where students will be crashing cars on a track...
Who will win? A car with more speed or more mass???? Using rubber band launchers and steel bearings placed in the car...students will conduct tests and experiments... Complete lab sheet to earn your grade... Work with your partner.

Friday, Feb 2nd: Lab again today...

Monday, Jan 22: Reviewed forces.... More on gravity...What falls faster: A dropped bullet or a shot bullet? Demos, notes and video of that question done on Mythbusters.. Can a bullet fired up in the air come down and hurt,kill someone? How and why? The last 10 min. students looked up their current grades and put them in their science notebook. No h.w. given... Make up your notes if absent.

Wednesday, Jan 24th: Reviewed Newton's 1st Law.... Another demonstration showing an object at rest stays at rest... Cool experiment...
Students watched a Mythbusters epiosode of a table cloth being pulled off a table setting at a speed of 100 MPH...Does Newton's law allow it to happen?

Thursday, Jan 25th: Do you wear a seatbelt when sitting in the front seat of a car?
Why or why not? Ans. and discuss with your people at your table... Mr. Zemek shared a story of how he finally started wearing seat belts.... You tube videos of people in cars with a seatbelt vs. those with NO seat belt... How does Newton's Law of Motion applied here? No h.w. given....

Wednesday, Jan 17: Who was Isaac Newton? 10 minute cartoon showing his childhood to adulthood.... Students watched the movie and had to list 9 facts about his life... On the bottom of the fact sheet were 5 force problems that need to be completed and turned in before you leave.... If absent see Zemek to complete your fact sheet...
Thursday, Jan 18th: Reviewed facts about Isaac Newton and what a Newton is...
Lab today: Students built an oragami jumping frog... Can you follow the steps and design a frog that can jump the farthest and land on a specific spot? Prizes for those students who can... Need frog for tmrw's lab...Save in your back pack.
Friday, Jan 19th: Lab today where students will jump and measure the distance their oragami frog covered.... Get an average and graph your results and 2 others at your table... Complete the lab paper identifying the forces involved in making your paper frog accelerate... Lab paper should be completed in class ...If not...you have homework...

Monday, Oct 30th: Notes on using the formula for speed = Distance/Time... How can you solve for distance? How can you solve for time? We took notes on the new formulas for this and did some practice problem solving in class.... Just notes... No homework yet....
Tuesday, Oct. 31: Halloween trick and treats today in class using dry ice.... What is dry ice? How cold is it? What is CO2? Demos using dry ice making carbonic acid and showing the color changes that happen as it goes from a base back to an acid... (using acid - base indicators... Bromo Blue and Pheno..) Students were able to have fun with dry ice at their desks with a small plastic container... No notes or h.w. given today..
Wednesday, Nov. 1st: How was your Halloween last night? Reviewed the trick and treats done in class yesterday... Can you solve for speed, distance and time using one of the 3 formulas? Practice in class and complete your google class q's posted on my google page...
Thursday, Nov. 2nd: How often should you see a dentist? Zemek will share his story of a trip to the dentist....Why did I have gingivitis? Students will see pictures of gum disease and why people get it... Information on graphs... Graphs are an important part of science and do you know how to read a graph? Notes and stories about graphs... No h.w. given.
Friday, Nov. 3rd: What is a distance-time graph? What does a positive slope, negative slope, zero slope and undefined slope mean on a distance - time graph? Students will create two distance time graphs after reading a story of traveling around the campus... The graphs will be turned in for a grade and completed in class.
Week 12 of Semester 1:
Friday, Oct 27th: Finish your lab paper... (both sides) Due before you leave today.
Watch a short video on drug use for Red Ribbon Week. Zemek read a profile and drew tickets for prizes... No notes or h.w. given.. If absent finish your lab paper and turn in.
Thursday, Oct. 26th: Lab today...Students went outside to get a time to cover 100 feet... You can run, jog or walk... Students then completed the steps to turn feet into miles and seconds into hours to get your speed in MPH and KPH. What is your velocity and list the fixed objects that determined you were in motion... Time will be given in class on Friday to complete.
Wednesday, Oct. 25th: Review velocity...Velocity problems are posted on my google class to complete and submit for your grade today... Graded papers and lab work was passed back to file in your science folder...New grades were also posted on Student Vue... Check and see your grade... Any mistakes??? Let me know.

Thursday, Oct 19th: Cool demo using propane gas showing its refractive properties in light on a screen... You can also show that its denser than air and pour it out from one container to another. Finally I have a propane fire on my countertop.
New Unit on MOTION AND FORCES STARTS TODAY... How do you know an object is in motion? How fast are we moving this very instant? Earth rotates and orbits how fast? Why does it NOT seem were moving at all? We watched indy 500 race cars doing 230+ MPH and it seems they move faster than the earth.....WHY?

Monday, Oct. 9th: No school....Teacher inservice Day..
Tuesday, Oct 10th: New quarter means new seating chart...Students that sat in back can have first choice at front row seats...The best in the class.. If time allows we started a new topic on TESTING and EXPERIMENTING... The 3rd skill of a scientist... Students observed demonstrations of what happens to objects when they are heated and cooled... Several experiments to watch and wonder why...

Wednesday, Oct. 11th: Solar Eclipse this Saturday morning....When, how much and what is a solar eclipse? Information given and discussed... More work on what happens when matter is heated and cooled...Finished doing the demonstrations we started yesterday... No notes or h.w. given.
Thursday, Oct. 12th: Vision and hearing tests for 40 min of class today... How are your eyes and ears... If you failed a test today parents will receive a letter stating you need to visit a eye or ear doctor... The last 20 min. of class students took notes on what happens to matter when heated or cooled... If absent see a friend to copy down the notes and a nurse will call you out of class in the coming weeks to test your eyes and ears....
Friday, Oct 13th: Did a raffle to borrow a pair of solar glasses to view the solar eclipse tomorrow morning... Must return glasses please on Monday..
Showed students what a 1st degree, 2nd degree and 3rd degree burn is... We are doing a lab today with propane burners...Must wear your safety glasses and don't be stupid. Students will create a vacuum inside a test tube to see particles speeding up and slowing down...What happens is very cool... Work with your partner to complete lab paper to earn your grade for the day...Lab will continue into Monday for part two of your drawing and explanation for another grade...
Week 9-- Semester 1:
Friday, Oct. 6th: Students reviewed the most missed q's on the measuring test yesterday...Class avg. was 20.5 out of 25. Test scores were entered into student vue...Did you grade go up?? Report cards for quarter 1 go home next week.

Students looked up and wrote down their current grades into their science notebook. We also passed back and filed all science papers and lab work into your science folder.... Tuesday, May 9th: What would it be like in outer space? Is it hot or cold? Can you hear any sound? What would happen to your body? Demo where Zemek has a jar where I can create a partial vacuum like space....I'll put a bell inside for sound. I'll put a small balloon to simulate your lungs... I'll put marshmellows in to simulate your muscles and brain...What happens? Watch and learn... Students also watched a 10 minute video on an astronaut talking about what space and zero gravity is like.

Thursday, Jan 12: Showed students how to FIND THEIR HIGH SCHOOL...(on the PSUSD web page) they are slated to go to in the fall....If you don't want to attend that high school you need to submit a transfer request....You have until March 3 for a transfer request. Students wrote in their science notebook if they wear a seatbelt when in the front seat? Why are why not? Students heard a story as to why Zemek does or does not wear a seat belt and why....Students watched a 10 min. You Tube video on people in cars WITH and WITH OUT seat belts... Thursday, Sept. 1: Lab today where students learned how to use the photogate timers..."MEASURING TIME"... Students competed who has the fastest finger in the west... Students also hooked up the laser timers to get comfortable using the equipment... Measuring is one of the top skills of a scientist.. Wednesday, Oct 13th: Students finished the Maze Lab Challenge...We gathered data for the class and determined who was faster at solving mazes... Students then had to write a conclusion. Tuesday, Oct 12th: Students worked on a lab we started last week...Using the steps of the scientific method: We wrote a question and hypothesis...Today we did the experiment and did 5 time trials of completing a peep-hole maze... Thursday, Oct. 7th: Minimum Day...Students released at 11:40 am. Parent conferences today from 12:30-700 pm (Break 3-4 pm). Today students reviewed the steps of the scientific method and we began an experiment where the steps will be used... Students wrote their own hypothesis after hearing what makes a good/bad statement. If absent get the lab paper from Zemek when you return.. No h.w. unless you have make up work to complete to raise your grade. Experiment is: Who's faster at solving peep-hole mazes: BOYS or GIRLS?
Wednesday, Oct. 6th: MINIMUM DAY..Students released at 11:40 am. Parent conferences are this afternoon from 12:30 - 3:00 pm. Students today had class for 30 min. and we corrected and collected a worksheet given yesterday on the steps of the scientific method... Students then went outside to see a demonstration of sulfuric acid mixed with brown surgar... An electron fight occurred that burnt the sugar.. No notes or h.w. given today. Conferences cont. tmrw. from 12-7 pm.
Tuesday, Oct. 5th: Notes and demos on the steps of the scientific method...What are the steps... Students took notes and watched demos explaining each of the steps... The last 20 min of class students completed a worksheet on those steps.. Can you place the steps out of order in the correct order? What is the hypothesis? What is the main variable? Friday, Oct. 1: Profile game is played the first 10 min. of class... I read 14 things the student wrote down about themselves on the first day of school... The students then try to figure out who it is.. Just a way to get to know one another... Students then saw a demo of why the lab sucked yesterday...Mr. Zemek did the lab on a larger scale ...Students took notes on how and why a vacuum was created... Class discussions on this... Thurs., Sept.30: Lab continues today... Students will continue to do the lab but today you need to complete your "LAB WRITE - UP" to earn your grade... Tuesday, Sept. 28: Notes and demos on what happens to matter when heated and cooled? Students watched cool demos and took notes on what occurs with the particles.... Friday, Sept. 17th: More practice in class using a balance scale and graduated cylinder....Can you measure the mass of an object over 100 g and read the scale to me?? Can you fill a graduated cylinder and read the volume to me? Can you place an object in the graduated cylinder and determine the correct volume? Many kids are having a hard time with this simple task....Lets see if we can make it happen...

Wednesday, Jan 27: No classes today due to parent conferences.... You have an assignment to complete on my google page to do... "SPEED LAB" ..This lab will give you credit for classes today... and a large grade ... Hope you did the lab!!?? If you work on the lab you'll get marked present... Thursday-Friday Jan 21-22: Mr Zemek did a cool experiment with sulfuric acid and sugar...What happens??? He'll explain each chemical and we'll watch it heat up to 300+ degrees... Students need to complete a short distance/ speed / velocity worksheet posted on my google page for your next grade...Students were given 15 min in class to complete this ...IF NOT DONE THEN IT"S HOMEWORK....
